Why does fatmanslim concentrate on waist reduction not weight loss?
Firstly, it is important to point out that waist size on fatmanslim
is measured around your stomach, 1cm below your belly button.
There is a link between weight loss and waist loss as measured below your belly button.
For every 1kg (2lbs) in weight that you lose, your waist will reduce by around 1cm.
For men in particular, fat stored in and around the abdomen,
(in other words waist size) represents an increased risk to health.
Clinical evidence shows that by reducing
your waist size by 5-10 cm you can significantly improve your health. This is why we focus on waist
loss. Additionally, many men regard the size of their gut to be a particular concern. It is a great
feeling when your trousers begin to loosen!

equates to about 2lbs in weight. Many fatmanslimmers have lost between 10 and 20cm in the
first 12 weeks, but it is best
to start off with a realistic target and if you exceed it then that is great! You will be set an
initial target of losing 10cm from your waist in the first 12 weeks. This will mean losing

I have read about sleep apnoea and how being overweight can cause it. What exactly is it?
Sleep apnoea is a potentially serious condition caused or made
worse by being overweight. In sleep apnoea the bodys airways become blocked due to the
pressure of excess fat around the neck. You actually stop breathing. This causes you to wake up
temporarily so you can unblock your airways and begin breathing again. This may happen as often as
200-600 times per night. As a result your sleep is highly disrupted leaving you very tired and less
responsive during the day. Weight loss can reduce snoring and improve sleep apnoea.

What is BMI?
Body mass Index or BMI is a common measurement of fatness used by doctors. It is calculated
by dividing weight (in kilograms) by height (in metres) squared.
Check your BMI with the fatmanslim
calculator. However, measuring waist circumference is now becoming the
gold standard used by specialists.

Does being overweight really make that much difference to your health?
Definitely! In the world famous Framingham heart study, being very overweight increased
the risk of
dying from coronary heart disease more than smoking or high blood pressure.
It is also the biggest cause of diabetes and is clearly linked to
high cholesterol and some forms of cancer (colo-rectal and gall bladder). Regardless of how
big you are now, losing 10cm from around your waist can significantly reduce your
chances of firstly developing and then dying from a weight related illness.

Does being overweight cause diabetes?
If you are overweight you are at increased risk of developing diabetes.
There is a well established association between excess weight and type 2
diabetes but even modest amounts of waist loss (10cm) can produce significant
improvements in the control of diabetes. fatmanslim encourages men to set an initial
target of 10 cm waist reduction in 12 weeks.
